HOW CAN I BE A CONTRIBUTOR?

There are two methods to become a contributor for Broadly Specific:

FINISHED ESSAYS

  • Be a reader. Make sure to read articles on our website in your desired category to get a sense of what we are looking for.
  • Read our writing guidelines below.
  • We accept essays or articles that have been published someplace else.
  • Send your essay to editorial@broadly-specific.com and write “SUBMISSION: (essay title)” in the email subject. For rejected essays, we will still offer our feedback.

ESSAY PITCHES

  • Be a reader. Make sure to read articles on our website in your desired category to get a sense of what we are looking for.
  • Generally, pitches will only be for deep dive features. Write something specific about a certain topic and prepare to do extensive scholarly research on your essay.
  • If we accept your pitch, we can discuss release timing and we may also help you with your research.
  • Send your pitch to editorial@broadly-specific.com and write “PITCH: (pitch title)” in the email subject. For rejected assays, we will still offer our feedback.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • Film Feature Writer: Writers who will write featured essays and deep dives about cinema.
  • Film Reviewer: Writers who will write reviews on various films. This will be a more ongoing contributor role since you are representing our publication.
  • Game Feature or Review Writer: Writers who will write either deep-dive featured essays or reviews about gaming.
  • Other roles: Music, art, literature feature writer and reviewer. We are also looking for podcast guests.
  • None of these roles needs any commitment, and you can write only one essay for us and not continue.

CAN WE PAY YOU?

Unfortunately, for now, we cannot pay any writers. All proceeds from Patreon, advertisements and so on are used to keep the website online, pay for all the software for our operations and grow our brand. At some point, if we somehow manage to strike it big, we will definitely pay our writers fairly, especially if they are regular writers.

THEN WHY WRITE FOR US?

We are still small in number, but we pride ourselves on being a creative collective, and it’s always nice to make new connections. Writing is also a very healthy and productive hobby that not everyone has a platform to publish their work on. Broadly Specific would also look good for your portfolio or resume, and some of our writers have gone on to write for other well-known publications like Fangoria.

WRITER’S GUIDELINES

  • Reviews: 750 to 1500 words.
  • Deep Dive Review (Spoiler & Analytical): 2000 words+
  • Feature: 1500 words+ (no word limit and our features range from 2000 to 5000 words+)
  • Use footnotes and/or citations with a bibliography at the end for any secondary sources. We are not as strict as academic journals but use some scholarly conventions here.
  • No plagiarism.
  • For cinema: name the director, year, and actor’s name in brackets.
  • Caption every image you have inside the article.
  • You may re-publish any article that you have written someplace else a minimum of 1 week after the full release. Be sure to notify us when that happens.
  • You own all the copyright for the article you publish, but we reserve the right to market it however we choose, which includes releasing it on our Patreon early access for our subscribers first before the public release.
